Chin Augmentation Washington DC

Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty, is a procedure to treat a chin that is misshapen, receding, or appears too large or small. A weak chin can give the appearance of a large nose or a short neckline, and in males, a recessed chin may lead to a false perception of weakness. The procedure is performed on men and women of all ages, and involves inserting an implant into the chin area to build up a receding chin and restore harmony to your face. Dr. Somenek can also surgically correct an overprojected chin by reducing its prominence. Chin augmentation is frequently combined with rhinoplasty to enhance the overall facial balance and achieve optimal results. Dr. Somenek will discuss this with you during your initial consultation if it is recommended.

What are chin implants made of?

Chin implants come in a variety of materials, including solid silicone shaped implants or Mersilene implants. Dr. Somenek generally prefers to use silicone implants because of their soft, natural feel as well as their ease of acceptance with the facial tissues.

The Procedure

Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty, is performed under either sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure typically can average about thirty minutes to one hour and is performed in an outpatient surgical center. An incision is placed under the chin and by gently stretching this tissue, Dr. Somenek creates a space where an implant can be inserted. The implant is made of synthetic material that feels much like natural tissue normally found in the chin and is available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. This allows custom fitting of the implant and an individualized approach to each patient’s face. After implantation, the fine sutures are used to secure the implant and close the skin.

Is chin augmentation right for me?

Chin augmentation is appropriate for healthy men and women who have reasonable expectations for improving a chin that is weak in appearance. There are nonsurgical alternatives to augment the chin. This can be achieved with the use of the injectable filler Radiesse or others with similar lifting power. For those that are not quite ready for surgery or an implant, this is a great alternative.

What to do After Surgery

Immediately after surgery, Dr. Somenek applies a dressing that will remain in place for three days. Some tenderness and post-operative discomfort is expected and can be controlled with pain medication. Some patients may experience a stretched, tight sensation after the surgery, but this usually subsides in a week. Swelling continues to go down over the next 4-6 weeks. Limited activity for the first couple weeks is recommended to avoid jarring or displacement of the implant.
