What Is a wrinkle relaxer?
Wrinkle relaxers, commonly referred to as Botox, are proteins derived from botulinum toxin that are injected underneath skin in order to minimize or smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face. Its safety is well established, as it has been used therapeutically for over 20 years.
When low doses of Botox are used, it selectively weakens or relaxes facial muscles, giving you a clean, smooth facial appearance. Botulinum toxin is a safe, effective, and proven method for treating fine lines and wrinkles.
Although there are risks, they are rare. Injection site redness, swelling and bruising are possible and temporary if they occur. Eyelid droop, asymmetry, and lack of effect are even rarer occurrences. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to postpone Botox injections until their little ones are no longer dependent upon them for nutrition.
Where Can The Wrinkle Relaxers Be Used?
- Eliminating wrinkles and lines caused by movement
- Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
- Softening neck muscles known as platysmal bands
- Reducing pore size
- Creating wider-looking eyes
- Lifting the top of the nose
- Lessening a gummy smile
- Treating migraines and TMJ
How do I know if Botox is for me?
If you are looking for an improvement in the age-related wrinkles, Botox may be for you. For those interested in relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles, regardless of age, it can be an excellent option that provides a refreshed look to rid you of the tired or angry appearance. Patients are often very satisfied with the subtle improvement that it provides. Many will say that their friends and acquaintances comment on how they look well-rested. Even in younger patients, Botox can be preventative and stop lines from forming and creating deeper creases that become more difficult to soften with age.
Botox is also commonly used to reduce the heavy vertical creases between the eyebrows, flatten deep forehead wrinkles, and smooth out the crow’s feet area of the eyes. Newer areas that are being treated include the age-defining wrinkles around the mouth, nose and the thick muscle bands of the neck.
Can Botox be preventative for wrinkle formation?
Absolutely! Many patients come in starting in their 20’s and 30’s looking to prevent wrinkle formation on their forehead, in between their brows, and around their eyes. Even patients that have been doing it for years are proof that they don’t have the deeper lines and wrinkles that their friends have whom haven’t been getting botox injections regularly. What is even more preventative for wrinkle formation is the consistency in which you get the injections. This ensures that the movement doesn’t fully return and start increasing the depth and number of the wrinkles.
When will I see the results and how long will it last?
You can generally expect to see results in 3-5 days, although it may take as long as two weeks. Most people can expect to enjoy the benefits for 3-4 months, and some people will see results lasting up to 6 months. These lasting results can reduce the need for a facelift or brow lift. The results can last up to 9 months when treating hyperhidrosis in the underarms, hands, and feet.
Botox treatment includes an initial consultation and facial evaluation. An individualized treatment plan to achieve your goals is created. The treatment takes only a few minutes and is nearly painless. Details about how your Botox treatment will be performed are provided during your initial consultation.
How much Botox will I need?
This depends on the size of the treatment area, the goal of your treatment and your anatomy. Every face is different and every patient has a different look they are trying to achieve. Consultations with providers are a great way to discuss how much you need as an individual. Not everybody needs the same dose in the same area, and we customize the dose accordingly to your individual needs.
